20 Outstanding Women!
We found the women who go above and beyond to make their communities a better place to live. Those unsung heroes in our neighborhoods – the ones who are already busy, yet find the time to give back in big ways to help others.

Today's Outstanding Woman is,
Mary Beth Fowler of Albany
Mary Beth is co-founder of The RED Bookshelf, a successful and effective nonprofit that inspires, encourages and motivates children to read by providing free, gently used, cleaned and mended books for Albany children on bright red bookshelves in the community where children go. She and co-founder Rachel Eveleth started the organization in 2009 as they became aware that many Albany children, particularly in low-income neighborhoods, were not reading on grade level. National research indicates that the number of books in the home correlates closely with reading proficiency. So The RED Bookshelf was established to create equitable book access. It started with one bookshelf and three volunteers, fifteen years later, there are 26 bookshelves all across Albany!
