What is That? An Unusual Blue Lobster Spotted at Market 32

CBS 6 Video

Two kids spotted it in the store's lobster trap

In a surprise find at a Clifton Park Market 32, two young boys, Parker and Zachary Morales, may have saved one of the rarest crustaceans on the planet—a blue lobster. The odds of finding a blue lobster are about one in two million, but 4-year-old Parker spotted the unusual creature during a routine trip to the supermarket. In an interview with CBS 6, the boys mother Danielle Morales said her kids noticed it almost in passing.

We were walking, and Parker goes, 'Hey! That one is blue!'

Shocked, she quickly snapped a picture and reached out to Via Aquarium in Schenectady, which set a rescue mission in motion to save the lobster from ending up in someone’s dinner.

The lobster, now named Bandit, was taken to Via Aquarium and placed in quarantine, where staff noted his rare blue hue might be due to diet. Cassidy Livingston of the aquarium says a genetic test needs to be done in order to determine if Bandit is a true blue lobster.

There's a chance he got more blue in color because of what he's eating, like shrimp,

Still, his unique color and the boys' sharp eyes saved him from the lobster pot. Bandit is expected to be on display at Via Aquarium in early October, giving visitors a chance to see this rare find up close.
