A packed gym at Shenendehowa welcomed alum and NBA player Kevin Huerter back on Tuesday.

CLIFTON PARK - A packed gym awaited Kevin Huerter, but this time it wasn't Madison Square Garden or the Golden 1 Center.

This time, it was his old stomping grounds, the gymnasium at Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park.  But he wasn't there to play ball, the Sacramento King was there to watch his jersey, #3, be retired in a special ceremony held Tuesday prior to the boys basketball game between Shenendehow and Shaker.

With Shenendehowa, Kevin Huerter propelled the Plainsmen to back-to-back sectional championships in 2015 and again in 2016.  The 2015 squad would cap an undefeated season at the Glens Falls Civic Center by winning the Class AA State Championship, and Huerter would be named Tournament MVP.  After another undefeated regular season, Shenendehowa would return to Glens Falls for the State Final Four in 2016, but their quest for back-to-back state titles would end in overtime by Rochester based Aquinas Institute in the Semifinals.  The New York State Basketball Coaches would recognize Huerter's efforts through an All-Tournament team honor in addition to earning the Class AA New York State Player of the Year honors.

After graduating from Shenendehowa, Kevin Huerter would go play college ball at the University of Maryland.  Following an average first season, Huerter's play improved in his Sophomore year, averaging nearly 15 points per game while shooting slightly better than 50% from the field, which earned interest by NBA scouts.  The Clifton Park native would declare early for the NBA Draft, and was selected 19th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.

A regular starter with Atlanta, Huerter improved his accuracy and point per game output in each season, resulting in a contract extension in 2021.  Atlanta would trade Huerter before the first year of his extension, heading to the Sacramento Kings in a multiple player swap during the off-season.  Sacramento was the landing spot for another Section 2 alum, Glens Falls's Jimmer Fredette in the early 2010's.

With Sacramento, Huerter pieced together his best season yet.  In 2022-23, Kevin started all 75 games played, averaging 15 points per game, a high mark in Huerter's NBA career.  Since then, Huerter would struggle to duplicate that season's success, and after starting the 2024-25 season as a regular starter, has been coming off the bench since mid-November.

Kevin returns to the Sacramento Kings as they continue their east coast trip in Philadelphia tonight where they'll face the 76'ers.
