Beautiful Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Begins Epic Journey

NBC New York

The Massachusetts Grown Norway Spruce is on its Way to the City!

The iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, a beloved symbol of the holiday season in New York City, has officially begun its journey to Manhattan. Each year, a massive tree is selected from locations across the northeastern United States, and the 2024 tree is no exception. This year’s tree, a majestic 74-foot-tall Norway spruce, was carefully felled in the town of West Stockbridge, Massachusetts. With its towering height and perfectly symmetrical shape, the tree is sure to be a stunning centerpiece once it reaches its destination. As part of the annual tradition, crews carefully cut the 11-ton tree down, securing it with ropes and lifting it onto a specially designed flatbed truck for the journey to Rockefeller Plaza.

Once the tree arrives in New York, it undergoes a meticulous installation process. Workers carefully lift and position it in place, then decorate it with thousands of sparkling lights and a crowning Swarovski crystal star. The tree’s lighting ceremony, held Wednesday, December 4th, marks the official start of the holiday season in the city. This ritual has been a part of New York’s Christmas tradition since the first tree was erected in 1933. The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree draws millions of visitors every year, symbolizing the joy and magic of the holiday season and becoming an enduring image of festive cheer in the heart of one of the world’s busiest cities.
