Kevin Huerter is heading to Chicago

The Shen Grad, who was in town last week for his jersey retirement, has a new team.

Shenendehowa alum Kevin Huerter has a new home.

In a deal announced late Sunday, Huerter was traded from Sacramento to Chicago, in a three team deal that sees De'Aaron Fox heading to San Antonio, Zach LaVine to Sacramento and Zach Collins and Tre Jones along with Huerter to Chicago.

The trade ends a tumulous time with the Sacramento Kings for the Clifton Park product.  After signing an extension and then getting traded by the Atlanta Hawks to the Kings, Huerter had a career year for Sacramento, posting his career high 15 points per game in his first season in the Californian Capital City.  But over the past year Heurter's productivity took a dive as his time on the bench increased starting in mid-November.  The contention window for the Kings starting to crack with their slow start, leading to coach Mike Brown being fired in December.

In 43 games played, Huerter has averaged 20 minutes per game, scoring 7.9 points per game.  He only scored 3 in 8 minutes played on what turns out to be his final game in a Kings jersey back on Saturday against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

That's nearly 10 minutes per game less than Huerter saw in the 2020-2021 season with Atlanta.

The trade hopefully will yield more opportunities for Huerter.  Chicago currently sits in 10th in the Eastern Conference, which would be just enough to make the Play-in Tournament in April.  It means Huerter will have another opportunity to come back to play in New York, as the Bulls face the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on February 20th.  A month later will be Kevin's homecoming as he returns to play in Sacramento, this time as the opposing team.

The deal ends quite a busy stretch for the Shen guard that was known for leading the Plainsmen to the 2015 NYSPHSAA State Championship.  On Tuesday, Shenendehowa honored Kevin Huerter by retiring his jersey.  And now, he's calling Chicago his home... for now.
