While we enjoy a stretch of warm weather this week, the atmosphere in the Capital Region was exactly the opposite on October 4, 1987. A weather event that comes along only once in a hundred years paralyzed the area. A freak early-fall snow storm barreled through the Northeast, causing tree limbs to fall and power to be knocked out to hundreds of thousands. Many waited as long as a week for power to be restored.

Due to trees down, may roads were blocked off, making driving almost impossible. Most schools and businesses were shut down, while those that stayed open became a place for families to find some heat.
