A big announcement was made on NewsChannel 13 Wednesday, long time anchor and reporter Elaine Houston - a staple on Capital Region TV for nearly 34 years - announced she is retiring.
Houston sat down with her co-anchor Mark Mulholland to discuss her long career and decision to retire. In 1990, Houston moved from Peoria, Illinois to the Capital Region to take on duties as a reporter for NewsChannel 13. She eventually became a weekend anchor and then an anchor for the channel's Live at 5 newscast, a position she held for more than 20 years.
Over the last three years, Houston has been pursuing and received her PhD in executive leadership and social justice from St. John Fisher University. Her last day on NewsChannel 13 will be December 29th.
As for what's next? She says after the last three years in school, she needs a good rest:
I'm gonna sleep for the next three months, I think and then I'll start working in the spring
